Resources to get you global!
STEP ONE- Global Education Student Assessment Tools Inventory:
You'll first want to understand where your students, school, and/or district stands in their current teaching of global competencies. Two items linked here are: 1. Global Education Checklist for teachers, schools, school systems, and state education agencies. This is a great resource for the building blocks of global education, global content and global skills. It consists of a survey to measure current integration of global competencies into curriculum.
2. I CAN statements for global competency. This matrix can be used before unit planning or to assess the global competencies being taught in any course.
STEP TWO- Digital Learning Inventory:
Using technology is an essential part of going global in the classroom. Not only will you need it to connect to schools around the world, but it becomes a tool to discover, create, share, and take action on global issues. The first step in reaching the 5 global competencies is learning the tools you have available to you. I created this digital learning inventory as the first step in my Teachers for Global Classroom program. Added at the end are my top 5 technology uses in my classroom and reflections.

STEP THREE- Standards-based Global Education & Understanding the Global Competencies: Before you can go global in your classroom, it would be helpful to aim for some specific outcomes. Before the Teachers for Global Classrooms program, I was integrating global learning in my classroom, but mostly because I knew it was a good thing to do and it would foster learning. However, now that I understand the competencies, the learning has become deeper and more meaningful and students are reflecting on their own global citizenship. These competencies are: 1. Investigate the World 2. Gain and Weigh Perspectives 3. Communicate Ideas 4. Take Action 5. Apply Disciplinary & Interdisciplinary Expertise Read in detail about these competencies and download the free book, Educating for Global Competence by Veronica Boix-Mansilla and Tony Jackson, by clicking this link: http://asiasociety.org/globalcompetence Download a one sheet guide to the four global competencies here:
STEP FOUR- Integrating the Global Competencies into the Curriculum Standards: After knowing the available resources and understanding the global competencies, it's time to get creative and globalize those lesson plans! I like to use backward design planning and am including various templates here that can help the re-working of already awesome lessons to include global competencies. I also have included example lessons of my own for each template type that incorporate the global competencies.
